Saturday, June 18, brings auditions for Season 10 of "American Idol" to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, or whatever it's being called nowadays.
And news reports estimated that 10,000 people stood in line in downtown Nashville for a wristband and ticket to audition on Thursday.
10,000 people.
And how many cities do they hold auditions in for one season of the show? And how many tickets to Hollywood do they actually give away? So how many people auditioning are living in a fantasyland where they envision being one of the lucky ones? (And how many are there just for the fun of it? Kudos to them.)
I mean, really. Don't you just want to go out there and say, "You really think you have a chance? Get real." Probably not very nice or Christ-like, I realize. But at what point do you have to get real and honest with people?
Course, is this process much different than being an indie artist in the music world, Christian or not Christian? The audition segments aired on "American Idol" reveal a number of people who think they're cut out to be a superstar artist but are knocked to reality when they don't get a callback or Simon shoots them down to their face.
How many demos of so-so artists do we receive at radio stations and record labels? Folks hoping to get that big break. And we either don't respond or give them a nicety as we close the door. Have you ever found yourself being brutally honest? Or just wanting to be brutally honest?
I do all the time. One of these days I just might act on it. "You're not good."
Maybe I'll go try out a few lines this weekend in downtown Nashville and see what happens. Course, they might mistake my helpfulness for auditioning for Simon's seat.
