Ah, things are finally returning to normal. For a second I thought the CHR format had figured out who they are, but alas, a new song from U2 strikes up the conversation again. Those rebels with a cause (OK, maybe just Bono's cause) like to stir things up, don't they?
Just kidding. We ourselves have stirred this conversation again.
How do you treat mainstream acts that put out great songs that have somewhat of a "Christian" theme, or at least are positive?
My answer is easy. You are one of two stations.
Station one plays anything mainstream that's funky-funky fresh. The Fray, Chevelle, U2 and heck, maybe Coldplay, would be a few of the artists that you might find on your station. This type of station is really reaching out to those un-churched. Bring 'em in with the same music they're hearing on the mainstream AC, Hot AC or Top 40 station. Sound less churchy and more positive. But be real with them. No fake stuff here.
Station two is the Christian CHR station that super serves the church. "Let's help Becky feel hip and impress her kids because she's up on the latest musical trends." That would be their hidden motto. This is the type of station that's going to flirt with a mainstream act at least once. Not more than one at a time though. Too much might alienate a few. Occasionally seem vulnerable without portraying yourself as a "woe is me Christian."
Is it that easy? I think so. There will be different sects within each of those types of stations.
The bottom line: Be a great station that focuses on connecting with your listener.
After all, isn't that where all great businesses thrive?
