In the summer of 1986, the group Huey Lewis and the News had a hit song called “(It’s) Hip to Be Square.”
The crux of the song, on the surface, was rebellion versus conformity. Most people saw a deeper, more mature meaning than that, though. There was satisfaction in being comfortable in your own skin instead of trying to follow trends.
But where’s this message on our stations? Why do so few people on the air give off the vibe that “It’s cool to be a Christian?”
Conveying some sense of that should be one of our main goals. It’s not always about reading Bible verses on the air, or playing listener sound bites of how God played a certain song “at just the right time.” While those may serve a purpose, they’re not cool.
We can do better. And if we want to welcome in younger listeners, we should. After all, if believing in something isn’t fun and enriching, why do it? Give me a reason.
