Don’t Pray on the Air

As much as this may have upset some air talents, PDs, and General Managers over the years, one of my main recommendations for CCM stations is “Don’t pray on the air.”

If that seems overly harsh or restrictive to you, let me explain what I mean. Prayerful THOUGHT is always welcome, but remember that to a new listener, someone bursting into full-blown official 'prayer language' on the air lives up to their worst expectations of what this format will sound like.

Be clear that I WOULD NEVER WANT US NOT TO RADIATE OUR FAITH. It’s just the shape that it takes verbally that concerns me. Formality is a line drawn in the sand. It’s not welcoming. You ARE a ministry, but you are NOT a church. You’re a radio station. Radio is about building an audience.

We want to be friend to friend, not preacher to congregation.
