I grew up in high school taking a lot of art classes, because I needed to fill some electives. But what I found to my surprise, was that I enjoyed learning and experimenting with different art mediums; pastels, acrylics, and oil paints. While there was no formula, there was always an "art" to drawing or painting. Always a beginning, middle and an end. The beauty of art was seeing something from your own perspective and then watching it come to life on canvas.
As a programmer or air talent, you have the chance to share your gifts, abilities, and camera angle that God has specifically given only to you. The chance to create a playlist, produce or host your own show, and use your voice and words as an instrument to impact the world.
Open Studio was the ultimate destination for any Art student in my High School. It was the ultimate hour and-a-half long class that allowed you to explore anything from ceramics to watercolor, and work find your flow working on the project at the easel.
I hope you love your job so much that you feel your station, your show, and programming is a bit like Open Studio Art Class. It's your chance to paint with many colors, or experience the different sounds, textures, and feelings of not only the music, but the messages, promos, and imaging that your air talent are communicating. For in the end, you are an artist. You are forming the tapestry, the painting, and the impression for the listener. But unlike Open Studio art class in High School, this kind of art is not just "art" like Mrs. Erich's classroom, for me, it is "strategic art." Everyone says, "you're either artist or analytical." For me, I'm a strategic artist. Knowing the numbers, the scores, the consumption, and strategically making a tapestry for the Twin Cities.
So find your flow, strategize, and live your art, on the canvas of radio.
