As I write this, on October 31st (Halloween), a morning show I work with just chose to talk not about Trick-or-Treating, but about how "today is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation."
Uh...okay. That is true, of course. It's also the 91st anniversary of Houdini's death, and 153 years to the day since Nevada became a state. So?
Look, this period of time from now through New Year's is the most powerful magnet, in terms of being able to attract new listeners and squeeze more time out of current listeners. But we can only accomplish those goals if we present not just our faith, but our presence in the community as neighbors who are Christians. (That's why October 31st should have been more about candy and costumes than about it being the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.)
Joyfully be part of the real world around us with the underlying certainty of WHY the season is meaningful. Yes, it's about thanking God for all our blessings, and celebrating the birth of Christ; but it's also about how much we all have in common, and how we're all winding our way toward turning the page on this year with the hope that everything RESONATING from this season will give us a fresh start and better things ahead for 2018.
Show your heart. Show your joy. Show your thankfulness. But first and foremost, beRELEVANT. Use what's TOP of mind to engage the listener. On October 31st, the joy of getting a FULL-size bag of M&Ms in your Trick or Treat bag, or why the little tiny "Three Musketeers" is mislabeled and should actually be called a "One Musketeer", would have been a better starting place than the Reformation.
