Another alarming trend is spreading, due to a lack of Strategic thinking: People who think that reading a bunch of Facebook postings on the air is the same as creating really great Content. It's not.
Think about what you're really saying when your show becomes a "Facebook show":
- Facebook is more creative than you are.
- Normal, average people, with no training at all in how to be entertaining or compelling, have more to offer than you do.
- Facebook is more valid than radio.
None of those is a true statement. Here's the truth:
- For every interesting thought you see in a Facebook posting, there are 5000 boring ones.
- "Creativity" means coming up with something yourself, not just "liking" or repeating somebody else's thought.
- In the USA, about ONE HUNDRED MILLION more people listen to radio every day than log into Facebook. Yes, Facebook is big, but not as big as you might think.
Using an occasional Facebook comment is okay – in tightly monitored moderation – but RADIO is still the largest and most successful form of social media ever invented. What your goal SHOULD be is to become the CREATOR of buzz on Facebook when people post reactions to what YOU did on the air. Letting Facebook guide your show is looking through the wrong end of the binoculars.
