Oh, the egos of disc jockeys. People doing sign-offs, like anybody cares that you're done, and teasing that Seymour Finkelmoose is next with "more great music." (I heard that phrase just the other day and thought, "Do you play Pachelbel's Canon in D? That's great music. How about 'Strawberry Fields Forever?' No? Oh, so your words were just "blah-blah-blah" then.)
It's not 1972. Nobody's sitting in front of the stereo with headphones on anymore. In the six-second attention span, multi-tasking world, we're often just another noise in the background; in many cases, maybe we're just sort of a mood service.
And there's nothing wrong with that. What IS wrong is thinking that the person on the other end of the radio is actively listening to everything you say.
Remember that the listener is ALWAYS doing something ELSE. Not just listening to you. So when you refer to something that happened a few minutes ago, chances are that I DIDN'T HEAR IT.
Do every break like the listener just tuned in - maybe for the first time. He or she may know nothing at all about the station, the format, or you. So you have to EARN being listened to.
Keep reading these tips and I'll show you how.
