Get Your Own Space

I recently heard someone connected to the music industry make a comment about musicians and/or record companies using Myspace pages as main websites for information and news, as opposed to creating separate unique websites like in the days of old.
What set this person off apparently was that the band's "main" website when entered into the browser redirected to a splash page which redirected to a Myspace page. There was no unique site (or page even) with band news, information, specials for fans, tour dates and online store. It's almost like those sites are a thing of the past now since Myspace gained popularity.
Not only can Myspace pages be clunky to download with all the special backgrounds and additives. But there is nothing special about a page that looks like everyone else's page. And the Myspace page really doesn't offer the music fan anything special (does it?).
So why are musicians and labels using it? It's free.
Why can't they fork over a few dollars to someone who can create a unique and easy-to-use site for the FANS to enjoy? If you have the URL already to create your splash page redirecting Myspace, why not create something special there for the fans? Seems if you want to create community of music fans, you might head away from the site where people are numbers.
