The Age Ol' Question

What makes music "Christian"? What separates the songs played in any genre of the Contemporary Christian format from those played on other formats? What allows for some songs played outside Christian radio to crossover into this format? Since the sounds can be similar, it comes down to the lyrics, right?

Now what if the lyrics don't name Jesus or God outright? What if the song is about relationships with other people and is not a direct worship song to God? Do these make the song less Christian or not Christian?

I say, no. I say that it's the spirit behind the song. The "Christian" part could even be the perspective or worldview of the one sharing the song, you know, if there are not enough references to Jesus.

If it's biblical, it can be a "Christian" song. Or a biblical song, at least, if you don't like that "Christian" tag. Use the Bible as your standard measure, not your own likes or dislikes or Jesus meter. And at the very least don't point out four or five songs that you would never play because they are not "Christian," even if you don't name those ones specifically. Because someone else might have been moved closer to God by those songs, even if you were not.
