Going "Home"

I've been thinking about the Okay for your Family moniker that some of my peers are using as positioning statements in other markets and how my product might be more so.

When I think of Family friendly it brings me back to Sunday nights when Disney used to run their TV programming. This is where I was exposed to "The Apple Dumpling Gang", "Herbie" and other films of that ilk. It was great family entertainment.

It was a special block of time every week for my family and me as we'd sit down and watch the tube and my parents didn't have to worry about seeing something that would furrow their eyebrows. We were home and we were safe.

It was in that frame of mind that I stumbled upon HOME FM.

Home Fm is a new station taking the concept of Family friendly and doing something a little different than just a Christian music station. From what I've read and heard, it sounds like HOME is mixing CCM music with choice positive mainstream songs that reflect core values of a Christian listener.

A station where you could hear the latest Casting Crowns song alongside something from Phil Collins? Absolutely! Sure, it's not brain surgery and people have done a "positive hits" type station before, but I find the positioning statement makes me feel something.

To my ears the idea of a station being HOME to me sounds a lot more pleasant and reflective of "real life" than a station that's "safe". What on God's green Earth is really "safe"? How do you live a life worth living and be "safe"?? Of course there's value in being safe but I'd rather go home...

To an average listener, home is the place they most want to be. Home is where we feel "safe" and warm, loved and accepted. Home is a starting place for my day and from there can I feel "safe" enough to leave and be a life changer out in the world.

Who knows what the future holds for Home FM? It's possible that they'll get a lot of people, Christian or otherwise, who may just tune in and are not looking for a "life-altering spiritual experience" but are just searching for something on their presets that is reflective of where they feel safest: HOME.

I do know than when my day is done, I'll be going there.
