MyFace & The Interweb

"So, do you have a page on MyFace?"

That was the question that was asked of me yesterday. At first I thought they were kidding. Then I realized they weren't.

And the barrage of potential smart-aleck answers began to make their run through my multi-track mind like a pack of crazed squirrels who've been given the keys to the nut factory.

At first I contemplated responding, "No, but I am on SpaceBook." Or something like that. I mean, they had opened up the door and a very entertaining couple of minutes could be lying in front of me.

You can have so much fun when no one but you knows you are doing it.

But I fought the urge to crack wise and just said, "Oh yeah, I've got a Facebook page. You can find me at....". And we both went about our business, as if nothing had ever happened.

But it had.

Someone who wasn't necessarily the most technically savvy person had attempted to talk to me about something they felt I could identify with. They wanted to find common ground with me, to connect. They know that I'm "up" on all these new computer things. How do they know? Because I helped them set up an email address about six months ago. I am now their go-to gal for all things networkable. That's me, the social computer guru. (More on that later.)

So how did they do in their attempt to connect with me in my area of "expertise"? Pretty much an epic fail. It would have been better to stick with something they knew more about, something ELSE we could identify with together.

And it reminded me to NOT copy their effort during my next stop set. Stick to what I know and to what I know will connect. Talk about what's probably on her mind already and have a conversation. Be REAL in my thoughts and experiences. Transparent, not translucent.

Now, if somebody from IT can just get my computer back online. This dang Interweb has been off all morning. I need to check my Tweeter to see if I have any new birdies. That's what us technical people call 'em, ya know.
