Superstitious, Or Just a Little Stitious?

Today is Friday the 13th. Which means we pull out all the superstitions and tales of bad luck. Black cats, broken mirrors, umbrellas opened indoors, walking under ladders, etc.

Well, maybe WE don't. We Christians shouldn't be talking about that stuff, right?

It's likely heard more in our mainstream counterparts and pop culture as a whole; but could it be that they only talk about it because that's what we're supposed to do on Friday the 13th? I'm mean, here I am, talking about it. It's kind of engrained in us; it's a part of culture now. You wake up on a Friday that happens to be the 13th day of a particular month and you gasp: "Oh! It's Friday the 13th!"

But really, what else can we do? Do you play along or don't mention it at all? Or do you go to the other end of the spectrum completely, condemning those who speak of superstitions and bad luck (even if they do so jokingly or by way of rote), thus sounding out-of-touch and judgmental.

I kind of think that Friday the 13th is like any other day. I mean, we don't plan for it; it's not a major holiday. So how superstitious are you on all the other non-Friday the 13th days in a year and what do you do every other day of the week? How do you sound then? On any give day, are you not talking about what everyone else is talking about? Or are you just playing along without making any waves? Or are you on that other end of the spectrum, picking out faults and judging?

My best advice, for days like Friday the 13th and every other day, err on the side of sounding informed and intelligent. Know where your audience and your potential audience are. And if you're not sure how to handle it, keep your mouth shut. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.
