You Might Be Ignoring New Listeners

This is a good reminder if you’ve been in radio for a while. New listeners don’t know you or the dynamics or your show… especially team shows. Worse yet, you might be unintentionally ignoring them. It takes effort to include new listeners in every on-air break.
But great brands purposely welcome new customers into their ethos. A Starbucks barista will politely correct a customer who orders a large drink by repeating back the correct Starbucks size name of grande. You get the idea.
3 WAYS TO HELP NEW LISTENERS FEEL WELCOME
- Attach the relationship to every name in every conversation. “My wife, Judy.” “Our dog, “Daisy.”
- Over explain benchmarks and segments like Pat Sajak does on Wheel of Fortune. Every. Single. Show. For. Over. Forty. Years.
- Acknowledge and welcome new listeners in different hours of your show.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
The lowest common denominator to your show and radio station is a brand-new listener. With a little cultivation, new listeners grow into regular listeners, and regular listeners become fans. So, if you’re not mindful and purposeful about helping new listeners feel welcome, they’ll just go away.
Welcoming new listeners is just another tool for your on-air tool belt.
