As the end of 2021 approaches you might find yourself working one final fundraiser and feverishly voice tracking a week’s worth of shows as you prepare to take some time off. You not only deserve it; you need it. Here’s proof:
If the past two years have felt like an excruciating marathon that you never trained for or even wanted to race, well, I understand.
If when you look in the mirror you see new wrinkles, pounds, and a few more gray hairs, well, I can relate.
If you’re working from home trying to write this and the house behind you is getting a new roof and all you hear is constant pounding, well, I TOTALLY GET IT!
Aside from the stressful world outside of work, radio itself is full of deadlines, pressure, projects, and customer service. If you feel drained, you’re not alone.
GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF TIME
I know that it’s better to give than to receive, but it’s also time to accept a little self-care. Finish strong and then rest hard. You deserve it. Your co-workers, listeners, and your future self all need you to leave your work life at your work desk this Christmas break. After all, you’ve earned the gift of time (off).
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
If you need to be purposeful in order to receive this gift of time maybe you should be ceremonial. Write yourself a well-done note, place it in a box, wrap it, and top it off with a little bow. Nothing fancy to steal time that you don’t already have. Simple yet ceremonial. Place this gift in your stocking with care so it’s waiting there for you when you get home to start your Christmas vacation. On your first day off go get it out of your stocking, open it, and read your well-done note. Cry if you must. Next, unplug from work, and plug into your family and friends. You’ve been gifted time, so be present.
