It depends on who you are when it comes to how long leftovers last, and maybe Thanksgiving leftovers can last a little longer than normal. My wife will push the leftover limits while I’m more likely to pitch them after two days. Neither of us would recommend eating the spaghetti from two weeks ago in the Tupperware container hiding behind the milk jug. Nasty!
The same can be said of your old, stale audio pieces that you created earlier in 2021…or even years ago.
TIME TO PITCH OR FRESHEN UP
As the end of the year approaches it’s time to take inventory of non-benchmark audio pieces that either need moved to the recycle bin or refreshed. If I were you, I’d look everywhere:
*station sweepers
*show specific imaging pieces
*opens (traffic, weather, community calendar)
*underwriting/sales spots (especially long term advertisers/underwriters)
*jingles (are there cuts you have but aren’t using)
I was listening to a station just last week and I heard no imaging up song intros. A song played then an imaging piece played…over and over and over. It was like being in the passenger seat teaching my oldest how to drive. Start. Stop. Start. Stop. Don’t get me wrong, the imaging pieces themselves were amazing, but the station had little forward momentum.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
It may be unreasonable to expect a sweeping refresh by January 1st, but at least look under the hood to determine if anything could bring a new freshness to your station’s feel. Don’t be afraid to completely pitch the “spaghetti” and the stained container along with it. If you find some imaging pieces that should be refreshed just set a date and work towards it. Stationality is important, and these little improvements make a difference.
