An Idea To Help Teams Communicate Better

In any workplace there’s always going to be communication issues. A ping pong table or pumpkin carving parties won’t magically solve serious frustrations between teammates; they’ll just cover up those feelings and perpetuate a fake culture.
You were born and wired a certain way. It plays into the way you process, react, and communicate. If you’re like me you’ve sat in counseling sessions where you (attempt) to learn HOW to communicate with another person by understanding HOW they can best receive what you’re trying to say. It’s that whole “know your audience” adage.
EGOS, ATTITUDES & COMPETITION
Walk into most radio stations and you’ll find egos, silos, competition, and the whole programming versus sales tug ‘o war. There are many ways to help tear down these natural walls and rebuild a true camaraderie toward achieving common goals.
Imagine your entire radio team understanding HOW each person they’re meeting with would best receive WHAT the other person is trying to communicate. Hey leaders, investing into some kind of personality test, whether it’s Meyers-Briggs, Enneagram, or DISC, for every existing and new teammate is just not enough. You must implement the results so that your team culture thrives.
PLOT THE DISC
A few years ago, I was at a station where our leadership team invested in DISC. I plotted everyone’s DISC result on a master document that every team member received (photo below). Many teammates began to understand the style that the other person would best receive. Even though it wasn’t perfect, we found ourselves talking about DISC tendencies in a healthy way.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
Whether you’re a leader at your radio station or not you can champion an idea like this. Send your boss, or even HR, this article so that they can catch your vision of wanting a healthier team who’ll accomplish great things together in the next year.
