Don’t Wanna
October 12, 2018
Have an opinion? Add your comment below. I don't wanna talk about radio's emergency performance this time around, how some stations hung in there while others played music as all hell broke loose, how I heard some stations doing really good work and others clearly being unprepared. I've talked about the need for emergency planning a lot lately, and I hope that the good things I heard mean that more stations are taking that advice to heart, but today, I'm just not in the mood

I don't wanna talk about radio today.
I don't wanna talk about the demise/scaling back/diminution of NextRadio. I talked about the problems with FM tuner chips in cellphones ad nauseam for years, from the elimination on many phones of the headphone cord antenna option that make the chips ultimately impractical to the public's lack of enthusiasm. Besides, the apparent wind-down is also about Emmis realizing that it can't be the only company paying to solve the problems and develop a way to measure listening and provide the attribution agencies demand nowadays. You can't blame anyone for not wanting to be the only ones spending a fortune for everyone else's benefit, especially if it's not paying off very effectively. But I don't wanna talk about it. I've talked about it enough as it is.

I don't wanna talk about podcasting this week, either. I don't feel like discussing the glut of true crime podcasts that are turning the medium into one of those Discovery channels, the ones that feed you cheaply-produced crime stories and raise your blood pressure a little more every minute. They work, but I'm not sure everything about it is positive. Also not really feeling the desire to talk about how radio people are doing what I predicted they'd do and big-footing the podcast business in "okay, the experts have arrived, we'll take it from here" mode. Don't even wanna talk about the podcasts I've been enjoying lately, especially the return of "Heavyweight." Can't be bothered to crank out a lot of verbiage about any of that. My mind's elsewhere.
I don't wanna talk about my frustration with talk radio in general right now, how I hear too many hosts displaying a limited or nonexistent grasp of issues, how talk radio is disenfranchising way more people than it's attracting, how while holding onto what you have -- the P1s -- is understandable, there's opportunity being squandered or driven to other media. It's Friday, I've talked about all of that here many times before, too, and I'm really not in that frame of mind.
I don't wanna talk about any of that. I just did, I guess. I'm not very good at not talking about things.

I'd wrap this up with some glib attempt at humor, but I... don't wanna. So have a good week and maybe I'll be in a better mood next Friday.
