Threads By Instagram Hit 10 Million Sign-Ups in 7 Hours
July 6, 2023
-
Last night, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, shared this thread:
To put that in perspective:
It took Facebook 852 days to hit the 10 million mark.
It took Twitter 780 days to reach the 10 million mark.
It took Instagram 355 days.
(TikTok, which was Musically when it hit 10 million, it took 10 months.)
From the Threads official account:
You need an Instagram account to get started. That’s a nice feature as people don’t have to start out at scratch with followers – some of your current Instagram followers will also follow you on Threads.
Right now, as the Threads account noted, there’s only one feed, which many of us enjoy. The feed is a blend of those we follow and those we haven’t yet discovered. Similar to TikTok’s “For You Page.”
And for those who want an “only people I follow feed,” it’s coming.
Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, noted “There are tons of basics that are missing: search hashtags, a following feed, etc…” Those features will roll out in time.
What does this mean for your brand? Assuming you have a detailed purpose for other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc… decide what might be Threads purpose?
It would be great for a local radio station and/or talent to be so hyper-local, you become known for “all things in your region.”
There are other plays to this – ones that I will strategize with partners of Lori Lewis Media.
But the idea is to jump in – be different, stand out – social media is about differentiation, not volume.
So, don’t get caught up in the follower count – put yourself out there and find what seems to work.
Build off what becomes your content strengths.
As for the longevity of Threads? It’s going to come down to whether Threads or Twitter delivers more for advertisers.
