Difference Between Instagram & Facebook “Stories” and Posts/Reels
- Stories are more fleeting, fun, fast moments from the day-to-day or a quick interaction between you and others.
They disappear 24 hours after posting unless you permanently feature them at the top of your profile.
- Posts are (should be) evergreen. They appear on your profile forever (unless you delete them).
- Instagram Stories appear at the top of the app.
- Instagram Posts & Reels show up in someone’s feed & in Explore.
- Facebook Stories & Reels can appear both at the top of the app and in someone’s feed.
When To Use “Stories”
- Timely, Casual – What you’re doing; “in the moment,” Behind-the-scenes, unpolished.
- Engage Current Audience – Stories are designed to keep present followers interacting with you.
- Unexpected Observations
- Content with links like blogs, ticket sales, giveaways, etc.…
- Questions, Polls, “Add Yours,” New Music, Quizzes, Rate Something, Tagging Products, Countdowns
When To Use Posts & Reels
- Evergreen – Content to be seen forever.
- Discovery & Awareness – Posts & Reels are designed for growth to reach non-followers.
- Meaningful, Memorable Moments
- Clips from Your Interviews, Your Shows, etc.…
- Inspiring, Informative, Encouraging, and Entertaining Content
This is what a “Story” might look like: (Little shocked the poll ended up being no one having faith in my giving up swearing, haha!) Have fun with “Stories.” It’s a great way to win top-of-mind when you have nothing to post or create a Reel with.
