Seven Social Media Trends For 2021
January 4, 2021
-
A New Year should always bring optimism for how we want to be better versions of ourselves, and an even more meaningful brand for consumers.
Especially so after this past year.
In the social space, it takes strategic consistency to capture and convert; building on brand, audience (+ revenue) development.
And with everyone so distracted; scrolling, posting, swiping, tweeting, liking, sharing, tik toking, downloading, snapping, etc...,it would do us well to revisit and refine how we’re behaving in the social space.
Seven Social Media Trends For 2021
-
Benchmark Content
People see the social space as a gateway to new experiences.
Yet all too often we stunt our growth as a useful, multi-faceted brand with random acts of social - over-sharing mediocrity.
Focus on one great piece of benchmark content a day in order to resonate. -
Unpolished is the New Polished
One of the better trends from 2020:
Raw and real, no-frills content - Production value needs to be more human.
(Get rid of those stock photos!)
Shiny, glossy content is not aligned with what people interact with most.
Go bare bones. -
Refine Tone Of Voice
Spend time with the “Jobs To Do” mindset introduced by the late Harvard professor, Clayton Christensen.
Better understand the audience; find the reason(s) why they “hire” you.
Study Audience Signals – what triggers reaction and equally what does not. -
Help People Feel A Part Of Something
It starts with content tapping into emotions: -
Immediacy of the Moment
With the “Stories” feature released on every platform in 2020 – hone those “Stories” skills:
Appeal Quickly: People tap “Stories” fast. They’re not waiting for you to get to the point.
Keep It Simple: Static graphics and explainer videos perform great.
Interactive: Test out polls, quizzes and questions – see what works for you.
Deals: Give people something they can’t get anywhere else.
Encourage People To Screenshot – whether it’s a recipe, a life hack, DIY, etc...
This helps you live in their camera roll well after the “Story” disappeared. -
Facebook Groups
The value of social media connections, in replacement of in-person community, cannot be overstated.
77% say the most important group they are part of now operates online.
98% of people who belong to an online group say they feel a sense of belonging and connection to others.
Over half of Facebook users belong to five or more active Groups. Groups are playing a vital role connecting people. -
Live content
Facebook and Instagram consumption doubled year to year – mostly due to stay-at-home orders – and “Live” content where the audience is fully involved has become what people appreciate.
Step out and try new tactics this year.
Brands paying attention and going beyond expectations find more opportunities for growth, leading to a more loyal (and profitable) audience base.

It all starts with a plan as nothing good comes from winging it.
