Bouncing Around From Faith To Fear, An Emotionally Wrecked Culture
April 21, 2020

Learning how to better understand what's going on day-to-day with the audience we serve during this crisis is critical.
Habits are changing, new routines are being formed, and the rollercoaster of emotions are at an all-time high.
In Jacobs Media’s recent COVID-19 study, they uncovered the mood of consumers while quarantined. On the chart below, they highlighted emotional words that summarize how people are feeling about this virus and the impact on our lives.
The one that stood out to me (same for Fred Jacobs) is “feeling up and down.”
We’re built for human interaction. People long for face to face conversation.
So connectivity on social & digital platforms is at a record high.
And the surge in digital and social media use is likely to be the “next normal.”
In McKinsey & Company’s recent Consumer Sentiment Analysis, 92% show strong intent to keep their online activity replacements due to isolation - such as streaming more audio, Facebooking/Instagramming live more, using social in general more, etc…
Meaning they are likely to adopt their new routines long-term beyond isolation.
No doubt COVID-19 is dramatically accelerating digital and social media use
**Example: Netflix just announced 16 million new subscribers growth for the end of March, 2020. (They targeted 7 million new subscribers.)
COVID-19 obviously led to this enormous growth. Why This Matters:
Emotions are Bouncing Around:
- Work more on being a constant in their lives.
- It’s not “content” they want; it’s how much you offer calm, comedy (correct tone) and company.
- Resonate rather than wanting to being seen.
Digital and Social Media Use Exploding:
- It doesn’t mean people will instinctively turn to us on these platforms
- Their day-to-day has been disrupted – we may be the last thing they are thinking about.
- Checking-in on Facebook or Instagram Live matters *but* only as consistent, virtual shared experiences.
- Meaning be the conduit to connecting kindness
- Find out who’s having a birthday, graduating, having an anniversary or other milestones in life and throw them a virtual party while isolated.
- Or simply fully involve the audience by inviting them to share your live streaming screens and have fun, relatable conversation.
- Send people “Quarantreats.” Help take their mind off of this.
That’s what matters.
People remember who helped them through uncertain times. Let empathy and relatability drive our online presence.
