Social Media Can Help Better Align With Your Next Job
January 21, 2020

In every industry - disruption and downsizing is happening perhaps faster than we've ever watched play out.
And when we're the one whose "turn" it is to face downsizing (and I've had a couple of those "turns"), let's make sure we're using social in a way that intrigues the next employer - not turn them away.
Process It *Off* Social Media
Losing a job can feel devastating; trigger a ton of emotions. People tell us to not take it personal, but it is personal.
It was our time (away from family and friends), our work, our passion only to be minimized to the classic "good luck on your future endeavors."
I never bought into "it's not personal," but what I did understand is the importance to talk this out face to face with someone or people in your inner circle, not online.
Image is everything, and often in these times - all we may have is our image.
Reduce Opportunities For Social Comparison
Social comparison in theory is when we determine our own worth based on how we stack up against others. Protect exposure and limit time spent scrolling, posting, tweeting and repeating. Make time spent on social more meaningful.
Decide How You Can Create Impact
As 'fun' as it can be posting, snapping, tweeting and making Stories all day - work on creating a more memorable and thoughtful presence.
Why this matters:
Four of the most important years of my career were spent with Fred and Paul Jacobs of Jacobs Media. They "found" me on Twitter and liked the content (and behavior) of my tweets. What lost opportunity it would have been to miss out on Jacobs Media because there was no discipline to my online presence.Identify the platform(s) you are strongest on and have the best experience with; place a stronger importance on them.
Define Your Image As The Solution
Our images and words want to be reflective of who we really are. This helps us align with the people who get us and want to give us our next opportunity.
We're defining our image every day in the social space by how we behave. And while there's not really a wrong way here regarding behavior - we are who we are - just know they believe who you are online is who they would get in the office.
Effective use of social can greatly benefit our overall health and professional relationships, so long as there's balance of use.
But with anything in life, nothing good comes from extreme use.
Lastly - find a few good books & podcasts to positively feed your mind; remembering all endings are beginnings and we are never truly alone.
"The only time we waste is the time we spend thinking we are alone."
