Stories, as you may know, is a feature initially created by Snapchat - and ultimately "borrowed" by Instagram and Facebook.
Stories is fluid content that will disappear in 24 hours if not saved.
And it has quickly become one of the most important pieces of social media content.
Here's why:
As algorithms continue to throttle our (poorer) performing posts away from News Feed, reducing reach, Stories remains visible at the top of News Feed.
So even when people miss our static posts - our Stories can make up for lack of eyeballs.
Stories is an excellent way to reengage passive followers and bring updates to the entire audience all day - but only if we're putting care into the content.
The following are tips from Instagram as they study user behavior with Stories:
Keep Attention With Speed
People go through Stories quicker than they do in Feed.
Think about speed as an opportunity to get your message across
succinctly.Split Your Story Into Scenes
Use multiple scenes to help capture audience attention.
They've found the top performing Stories had shorter scenes, on average, 2.8 seconds per scene. (This is key!)
Enhance With Sound
Most people view stories with sound on, so include quality audio. 60% of video stories are viewed with sound on.
That said get your message across without sound as well to ensure you reach people even if they have sound turned off.
Once these fundamentals are down - then think out what type of Stories you want to create - don't wing this:
- Product inspiration or launches
- Exclusive experiences
- Promotions
- How-to demonstrations
- Behind-the-scenes videos
The Instagram Data Team revealed we are opening the app over 30 to 40 times a day. That's a lot of opportunity to grow our brands - or get lost in the sea of sameness.
Ensure we're making an impact by always playing to audience habits and needs. If on average we're only siting through Stories for 2.8 seconds - learn to say a lot in less time.Reach out to me anytime on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Twitter.
