2018 marks 10 years (already) I left day to day programming to study the social space and what it could mean for brands.
It's quite an interesting look back.
And while social media has changed so much in the past decade - there have been lessons observed along the way that have stood the test of time (and have kept brands in News Feeds regardless of the ever altering algorithms.)
These timeless fundamentals do not only apply to the social space - they can apply to our lives, too.
- Be less about what you're selling (listen now!) and more about the essence of the brand (inclusiveness)
- Think of social as serving; not interruption
- Size doesn't matter; it's caring that counts
- Go beyond the ordinary and create meaningful moments
- Showcase the audience every chance you get through UGC (user generated content) and UIC (user involved content)
- Focus on what is valuable; people want to feel a part of something
- We are a scroll nation; pay attention to what triggers reaction
- Equally study what does not generate interaction and stop; pivot for optimization
- It's often not the content missing the mark but our approach to it
- We are a culture of creating shared experiences
- Never underestimate the power of 'Holy Crap' moments
- Social media is the metric of emotional response
- We define our image every day by how we behave in this space
- Choose words wisely; loose tweets sink fleets
- Even if you're right, if you're rude, you're wrong
- The world is unmoved by how great your prize wheel is
- Mediocre social media is as brand erosive as bad breaks on-air
- Seek to resonate; not just to be seen
- Being involved every day is more important than the (viral) 'lightning strike'
- Your radio show is not a day part; it's an enterprise that should always be on
- Be flawsome (flawed + awesome)
- Everyone is walking around with the Internet in their pants
- Social, for some, is the entry point to your station
- Stay fluid, my friends. If you're using social the same way you were a year ago, you're already behind
Oh and perhaps the most important social media takeaway in the past decade:
- People spend more time on Facebook than personal grooming
Continue testing, tweaking, training and building the disciplines it takes to become a memorable, fan invested brand.
