Radio's Socially Savvy Recap The Worldwide Radio Summit
May 1, 2012
-
Many radio colleagues that weren't able to attend the 2nd annual Worldwide Radio Summit last week have been asking how it went. While "engaging" or other similar sentiments apply, it's not easy to capture the spirit of what it's like to truly be in at these events.
Running into old friends or getting to meet colleagues you've "known of" for years face to face is uplifting – and as one person said to me, "good for the soul."
We've been banged around a bit in our industry – watching some friends lose gigs as well as others bouncing back into even better jobs. We've also lost some incredible talent in the past few years which makes these industry events serve as a reminder of the importance of catching up with each other when we can.
So, I'll do my best to try and pull you into a weekend that was filled with great names, voices and thoughts in a way that only "Merge" could do it - using the socially savvy attendees who (unknowingly) became my "citizen journalists" to tell you a bit of the story of last week's Summit.
Right off the bat - you knew the Summit was going to be fun when you found this waiting for you:
So the Summit started Friday morning with the Keynote Panel "Embracing Radio's Future."
We heard from a panel of top radio folks (you'll recognize some of the panelists in the tweets below.) It was radio's top brass talking about the current trends and future forecast for "all things radio."
(And just as folks were following the #WWRS2012 thread – AllAccess' Perry Michael Simon popped up, adding humor to the conversation.)
Next it was "NEW WAYS TO MONETIZATION - Monetizing Radio – The Future ABC's Of Generating Revenue." Here's some of the Twitter play by play:
Then it was time for Fred Jacobs and Jacobs Media TechSurvey 8 – An Exclusive Look At The Largest Radio Poll Of Its Kind – Ever!
Over 57,000 radio fans chimed in on radio, mobile, social and digital.
The Worldwide Radio Summit luncheon on Friday was hosted by Elvis Duran.
After lunch, we had a chance to chill out on "Tweeting" and "Instagraming" to listen to some music during "PLAY US YOUR HITS: "The Next Big Radio Hit."
Increasing Your Smartphone Capabilities:
MUSIC & PROGRAMMING – Blending PPM Smarts Into Outstanding Content:
Day two started with a panel of pros talking about "UNCONVENTIONAL RADIO: A MULTI-MEDIA EXPERIENCE."
COMMUNITY/BRAND BUILDING: Assembling Your Special Forces:
That's referring to a funny "Cialis" comment/moment between Greater Media's VP/Prog. Buzz Knight and myself – room laughing moment. Most of the panel was light – but at times – it was a very truthful panel about the full time thinking required in the social space.
THE HITMAKERS – "The Sound That Moves The Dial"
Day two of the Summit provided "Mr. Bad To The Bone" George Thorogood interviewed by Matt Pinfield, plus the 2012 Worldwide Radio Industry Awards!
A TRUSTED FILTER – "Air Talent – Building Your Radio Community – From Local To Global"
It's important for our industry to hold these events. We get to talk with each other, learn and grow as a business. Many times at these conferences you find it's the smallest things that resonate that you end up taking away and applying to your brand (and maybe even yourself) to refine and recharge.
Thank you, Joel Denver and Sat Bisla. The time and toll it takes on you and your teams to get our industry together for a couple days is appreciated.Reach out to me anytime on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Twitter.
