Radio Jocks And Today's Listener

Lori Lewis offers a way to catch up after the Labor Day holiday.
-
The end of Labor Day weekend has always signified the “end of summer” for many; less flip-flops worn around the radio station and everyone perhaps more focused on business at hand.
To keep this week’s “Merge” light since we are likely playing catch-up after a long holiday weekend, please take two minutes to watch this silly and important conversation piece --especially if you think Facebook and Twitter really are “time sucks.”
Silly, I know, but it seems to be how these social sites are viewed by many in our radio industry. There are a lot of well-meaning people doing lots of random things on these sites with little thought behind why their radio station is even on Facebook and Twitter in the first place.
These social sites are treated more as “recorded promos” about the radio station than they are studied as perhaps gateways to some type of brand advocacy program.
Take the time to understand why your audience even signed up for Facebook and Twitter accounts. What is their primary purpose in using Facebook and Twitter?
What are their needs? And how can you make their lives simpler?
Merge those answers with what you want out of this social space and you will have an easier time creating your stations philosophies, goals and attributes to guide you towards trackable success.

There will be a great deal of “social” talk at the NAB/RAB show in Chicago next week, including a couple of panels I was honored to design: “R U A Social Misfit” and “Build Your Community Before You Need It.”
FRED JACOBS, PAUL JACOBS and I will be tweeting from the event using the hashtag #NABShow.
